Micashield is an aqueous dispersion of chemically exfoliated Vermiculite.
Vermiculite is the name given to a group of hydrated laminar Aluminium-iron-magnesium silicates. Raw vermiculite consists of thin, flat flakes containing microscopic layers of water.
When Vermiculite is exfoliated, either thermally or chemically, the microscopic layers of water are removed and this either causes expansion (thermally exfoliated) or creates microscopic, individual platelets that are freely suspended in water (chemically exfoliated).
The subsequent high aspect ratio of Micashield in its powder form provides a material additive which can offer significant improvements to the fire-resistance of a variety of materials. Micashield is a non-toxic and easy to use product that is environmentally friendly.
Micashield is available in numerous formats, each suitable for the specific application type. Carefully controlled processing techniques ensure that all the Micashield range of products exceed the most exacting tests that each fire protection sector demands.
Micashield is available to fulfil requirements in Coatings for Industrial textiles, Wet and Dry Fire Retardant additives and Passive Fire Protection situations.
Vermiculite is inert and does not react chemically or burn.
When subject to heat Micashield forms a glassy layer equivalent to a char layer which inhibits access of oxygen to the combustible material.
This physical barrier acts as a suppressant to smoke and to re-ignition. It reduces the temperature evolution of the substrate.
Micashield accumulates at the surface of the substrate and forms a barrier to mass and energy transfer. Micashield reduces the rate of flame spread and heat release.
Micashield can be added to many different materials as it is encapsulated rather than chemically bound.
